Mobile 3.1 Released: Improvements and Updates

We have recently released the new version of our popular Mobile Joomla! extension. This update brings several improvements and updates to the underlying framework, making it more user-friendly, faster, and more powerful than ever before.

Improved Optimization Framework

One of the most significant improvements in Mobile 3.1 is the improved optimization framework. The extension now uses more advanced optimization techniques to deliver faster page load times and better performance. This means that your website will load faster, leading to a better user experience.

Improved Processing of Async, Defer, and Module JavaScripts

The new release also includes improvements to the way asynchronous, deferred, and module JavaScripts are processed. This ensures that these scripts are loaded and executed in the correct order, resulting in faster and more reliable page loading.

Support for Low-Quality Image Placeholders

Mobile 3.1 also includes support for low-quality image placeholders for lazy-loading images. This means that when an image is loading, a low-quality version of the image is displayed first, giving the user a preview of what the final image will look like. This helps to improve the user experience and reduce bounce rates.

Support for Merge and Minify Exclusion Rules

The new version of the extension also includes support for exclusion rules. This allows users to fine-tune the behavior of the extension by specifying rules for excluding certain CSS, JavaScripts, and images from being merged or optimized. This gives users more control over how the extension works and helps to ensure that it is optimized for their specific needs.

Fixed Backend Performance Issues

Updated Mobile Devices Database AMDD

Finally, the Mobile 3.1 release includes an updated mobile devices database AMDD. This database includes information on the latest mobile devices, helping to ensure that the extension is optimized for the latest devices on the market.

Guide to Upgrade the Mobile extension from 2.x to 3.x

1. Check that your server matches the minimal requirements: Joomla! 2.5 and PHP 5.6.

2. Don't forget to make a backup and, if possible, test on a copy of your website.

3. Note that the Mobile extension has been split into Mobile and Adaptive packages (the former is used for page speed optimization, caching and PWA support, and the latter is used for device detection and template switching). That's why three packages should be installed:

3.1. Install Mobile 3.x or Mobile Pro 3.x package (depending on your subscription). If you have active Mobile 2.x Pro/Club subscription, you can upgrade to Mobile 3.x for free.

3.2. Install Mobile Adaptive 3.x package.

3.3. Install mobile template adopted for Mobile 3.x:

• Mobile Basic 3.x (free)
• Mobile Elegance 3.x
• Mobile Flat 3.x
• Mobile Square 3.x
• Mobile Cupertino 3.x (formerly named Mobile iOS9, so don't forget to set this template in the Adaptive settings instead of Mobile_iOS9)

Note that if you are also upgrading Joomla (e.g. 3.x to 4.x), it's recommended to uninstall the old mobile template and then install the new version after Joomla has been upgraded.

4. To activate Mobile Pro, open Settings page, enter your API key from Account page, and save changes.

Mobile 3.0.1 Release

Mobile 3.0.1 has been released. This is a regular update with following changes:

1. Fixed processing of optimized images during update from Mobile 2.x
2. Fixed combining of javascripts in the XML-based optimizer
3. Fixed detection of mobile template updates
4. Added "Set" button to the "missing API key" warning [Mobile Pro]

As always, you can update Mobile 3.0 to the new version via the Auto Update feature, or by downloading the Mobile package and installing it from the backend. Do not forget to backup your website before the update!

Mobile 3.0.0 released

The great day is here. We are happy to announce the stable release of Mobile 3.0.0, which supports Joomla! 2.5-4.2 and has a lot of new features compared to Mobile 2.x:

• both the mobile version and the desktop version are being optimized,
• support of Progressive Web Application (PWA),
• improved page caching,
• support of responsive images, tables, videos (HTML5/YouTube/Vimeo/Kickstarter/Twitch), and other embedded elements (Google Maps/Docs/Sheets/Slides and Facebook posts),
• off-request optimization mode,
• above-the-fold CSS styles,
• support of DNS prefetch and URL preload,
• generation of the srcset attribute for images,
• Google Fonts optimization,
• and a lot more...

Mobile 3.0 Beta-testing

Hello! We would like to invite everyone to participate in the public beta testing of Mobile 3.0, which has the following differences compared to the stable version 2.1:

1. Supports Joomla! 2.5-4.1 and PHP 5.6-8.1.
2. Everything related to adaptive design (i.e. using a separate template for the mobile version) is moved to the separate package Mobile Adaptive. Without it, Mobile 3.0 works in a "responsive design" mode, i.e. optimizes your existing template.
3. Now both the mobile version and the desktop version are being optimized so that there is no need to install additional optimizing extensions (and resolve conflicts that may arise).
4. Added support for "responsive" (which adjusts to screen width) images, tables, videos (HTML5/YouTube/Vimeo/Kickstarter/Twitch), and other embedded elements (Google Maps/Docs/Sheets/Slides and Facebook posts).^*
5. Page optimization code has been significantly redesigned to achieve maximum performance (and to get closer to 100/100 in PageSpeed Insights tests):^*
   • Off-request optimization mode in which the page is given to the first visitor as quickly as possible with minimal optimization, after which some extra operations are performed in the background (image optimization, compression by the brotli algorithm, etc.), and the fully optimized page is sent to subsequent visitors.
   • Generation and use of the so-called above-the-fold CSS styles for the main page with asynchronous loading of other styles.
   • Support of DNS prefetch and URL preload.
   • Automatic generation of the srcset attribute for images.
   • Google Fonts loading optimization.
6. Implemented a page caching, which is much faster than the built-in "System-Page Cache" plugin in Joomla! and is based on a tagged cache, i.e. allows to automatically update the cache when necessary (e.g. creation or editing of articles).
7. Support of Progressive Web Application (PWA).

P.S. Do not be afraid to experiment: if something went wrong during testing, you can always restore the settings to their original state by simply typing the code "IDDQD" (w/o quotes) in the admin panel of the Mobile extension.

P.P.S. There is also a secret mode for additional settings (code "IDKFA"): there, in particular, you can switch to using ImageMagick for image processing, enable support for webp and avif formats, use the jpegoptim and optipng utilities, and configure a bunch of other settings that are still under development and not moved to the "main" settings yet.
