Cannot install on 1&1 host with Joomla 1.7.3

I have tried various ways of installing Mobile Joomla 1.0RC5 on my test site hosted with 1&1 but have failed to complete the install.
Installing via the Extensions Manager and selecting the tar.gz brought me to a 404 error panel.
Extracting the files and converting to a zip format got me a little further but found empty folders for majority of components.
Transferring the extracted contents of the tar.gz to my sites tmp folder and installing from there gave false hope that it had been installed correctly, only to have a further error saying that the Admin Menus couldn't be created.
Uninstalling MJ confirmed that many of the components, templates etc were just empty folders.

I did a search around the forum and found that other users with 1&1 have reported problems (i.e. we do not have access to modify php.ini to set the php temporary folder or upload size) but did not find any solutions.

I would like to try Mobile Joomla but would appreciate some help in knowing how to get it to install first!

have you had any luck with getting this to work yet on 1 & 1. I am having the same problem - getting an internal server error when I try to install the com.

I have upgraded the php from 4.5 to 5.2.17, also checked the size of the temp folder and its set to 90mb so all should be fine.

I have installed this onto several sites that are on Hostgator and works straight away with no issues what so ever.

If you have had any luck getting this on 1 & 1 I would really appreciate being  pointed in the right direction.

   No, I have given up on trying to install at this time as not had any feedback from anyone else who has managed to get this working on 1&1.

I have adopted an alternative approach by using Joomlart's T3 Framework 2 for Joomla 1.7 using their JA T3 Blank template (www.joomlart.com/forums/downloads.php?do=cat&id=361) which works for some mobile browsers such as iPhones using Safari.

I would prefer to use Mobile Joomla but cannot do so until can overcome the install problems.

1&1 is a right pain. I will continue to see if i can find a solution. If i do i will post it up here, but i think I have exhausted pretty much everything i can do on 1&1

Such as shame as this is such a great plugin
